Our experience in cardiac care

Our team approach to care delivery focuses on the patient to accomplish rapid diagnosis and treatment. Our highly trained staff are prepared to quickly determine how best to treat your symptoms, depending on the condition of your heart.

We're more than just part of the largest provider of heart care in the Kansas City area. We excel at the treatment of cardiovascular disease. The cardiologists and cardiac surgeons at Menorah Medical Center participate in research to discover new techniques to reverse blocked heart arteries, prevent cerebrovascular accidents (strokes) and strengthen weakened hearts.

Patients can receive an extensive range of cardiac care including medical management, cardiac catheterization, cardiac rehabilitation, heart screening and imaging and open-heart surgery.

Chest Pain Center

When you or a loved one experience chest pain or a cardiac event, you can be sure that the physicians and staff at Menorah Medical Center are prepared to diagnose and treat you rapidly and effectively. We are a member of the first chest pain network in the Kansas City area.

Menorah Medical Center is an accredited Chest Pain Center—one of only 200 nationally recognized chest pain centers. Our emergency department and cardiac catheterization labs are staffed around the clock with trained physicians and nurses so we can reduce the time to treatment during the critical early stages, when actions are most effective.

Whether you are experiencing a minor emergency or a life-threatening situation, we can provide the emergency care you need.

Heart imaging

Heart screening and imaging are key to quickly and accurately assess the condition of your heart. To help detect heart disease in its earliest stages, Menorah Medical Center offers a variety of exercise and medication-induced stress testing options.

We've developed a sophisticated imaging network that stores the actual images recorded during cardiac angiography, echocardiography or electrocardiogram (EKG). No matter where you are, your heart history is immediately available to our qualified heart care specialists.

Many of these tests are performed on an outpatient basis, and your doctor may order several for you:

Cardiac PET exam

Menorah Medical Center's cardiac positron emission tomography (PET) exams help evaluate heart health by measuring the coronary arteries' blood flow to the heart muscle.

For decades, doctors have used cardiac PET scans to identify the presence or absence of coronary artery disease in people who have had symptoms or risk factors. Exam results can also show if any follow-up treatment is needed. Here's how the procedure works:

  • A small dose of radioactive medication will be administered through an IV line in a vein in your arm. This lets the PET camera capture pictures of your heart.
  • Small electrodes will be placed on your chest so the medical team can monitor your heart's electrical activity throughout the study.

Most cardiac PET exams take less than one hour; however, a longer exam should not cause concern. Only a doctor can decide if a cardiac PET exam is right for you. You'll need a referral from your physician to have this test.

Coronary calcium scoring

Menorah Medical Center offers the latest in coronary calcium scoring, with a 64-slice CT scanner equipped with low-dose technology to limit radiation exposure.

This scan shows the location and extent of calcified plaque in the walls of coronary arteries. It takes five to 10 minutes and is non-invasive, so there's no pain and no injections. This scan helps detect coronary artery disease, which is a leading cause of heart attacks.

This test is not covered by most health insurance or health plans. The test fee is $50, payable by check, credit card or cash at the time of service.

Low-dose CT cardiac imaging

Menorah Medical Center offers low-dose computerized tomography (CT) scanning that cuts the patients' radiation exposure up to 50 percent. Our low-dose CT scanner also offers cardiac computer tomographic angiography (CTA). This is the only non-invasive way to visualize the heart and identify coronary artery disease.

The imaging system drastically reduces the radiation dose to patients and is especially beneficial to children who need a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan and patients who may need multiple imaging tests, such as cancer patients and women of child-bearing age.

Cardiac rehab

The accredited cardiac rehabilitation program at Menorah Medical Center is a medically supervised exercise program designed to improve cardiovascular health for people who have or are at high risk for heart disease. Patients enrolled in this program are given tailored support and guidance in achieving cardiovascular fitness through exercise and nutrition.

In addition to setting individual exercise plans, the cardiac rehabilitation program staff provides counseling and continuing education to help you control or eliminate cardiac risk factors and make a lifetime commitment to a heart-healthy lifestyle outside of the hospital.

Care Connect

We're always looking for ways to improve healthcare. That's why we created Care Connect, which makes it easier to navigate through the system. It connects you to the right care and keeps you and your loved ones healthy.

With Care Assure, one of Care Connect's programs, we can automatically screen the results of tests performed during an emergency or doctor's visit to find warning signs and prevent emergencies such as a heart attack or a stroke. If test results show you're at risk for a possible emergency, a specially trained nurse will contact you to help connect you to the care you need to help prevent a future emergency.

Importance of a Healthy Heart

Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women. In fact, one person dies every 36 seconds in the United States from cardiovascular disease. And this is now compounded by COVID due to the harmful effects the virus has on the heart and vascular system.

Dr. Aaron Doonan, with HCA Midwest Health, discusses why these numbers are growing and how new advanced technology is increasing the chances of survival, especially with patients who have been hospitalized with COVID.
