Overland Park Regional Medical center breaks ground on $40 million surgical services expansion
Overland Park, Kan. — Overland Park Regional Medical Center, a trusted healthcare provider in the region for nearly 50 years and part of HCA Midwest Health — Kansas City’s largest healthcare system — officially broke ground on Thursday, July 17, for the next phase of its long-term expansion plan.
The multi-phase, state-of-the-art expansion represents a continued investment in healthcare infrastructure and critical resources to meet the evolving needs of a rapidly growing Johnson County.
The $40 million surgical expansion marks the first step in a two-phase, $120 million project. It builds on an earlier $110 million investment completed in 2013, which included the development of a new, state-of-the-art trauma center, emergency department, patient tower, a multi-level parking garage, and a walking and biking trail connecting neighbors and the community from Quivira Road to the Indian Creek Trail in Overland Park.
This new phase will add approximately 9,000 square feet of new surgical space and renovate 10,000 square feet of existing space, further expanding access to high-quality surgical, specialty care, including advanced neonatal surgical services.
“For nearly five decades, Overland Park Regional Medical Center has been committed to supporting the health and well-being of our growing community across a four-state region,” said Overland Park Regional Medical Center CEO Matt Sogard. “This operating room expansion has been years in the making and will allow the outstanding surgeons at Overland Park Regional Medical Center to continue delivering advanced surgical care to our growing community.”
Phase one - Surgical expansion highlights
- Construction of a single-story extension and a new basement level
- New roof penthouse
- Three new operating rooms (two for neurosurgery, one for orthopedic procedures)
- Four new post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) bays
- Six new preoperative care bays
- Two new endoscopy suites
- 3,000-square-foot expansion of the sterile processing department
- Two new elevators providing direct access to the surgical suites
This phase is expected to be completed in the second half of 2027.
Phase two - Enhanced regional capabilities
An additional $80 million investment — slated to begin in 2027 and conclude in 2030 — will further expand the hospital’s ability to deliver advanced maternal, neonatal, and surgical care. Plans include increasing capacity in Johnson County’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), relocating the hospital’s helipad to the rooftop, and enhancing emergency room access and inpatient services.
The new rooftop helipad will accommodate the hospital’s specialized neonatal and maternal transport helicopter, operated by Overland Park Regional Medical Center and equipped as a flying ambulance. The upgraded location will enable faster, more direct access to lifesaving care for the region’s most vulnerable patients.
This long-term expansion underscores Overland Park Regional Medical Center’s role as a regional destination for trauma, surgical, maternal, and neonatal care, as well as its position as Johnson County’s only Level II Trauma Center.
