This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the strength, resilience and love of mothers like Lindsay McVay, whose second pregnancy journey began with unexpected news but was met with unwavering support every step of the way.
At her 20-week anatomy scan, a soft marker for Down syndrome was identified. She was referred to the Fetal Health Center at Overland Park Regional Medical Center for further evaluation. There, she met with a maternal-fetal medicine physician and Ilana Chilton, a certified genetic counselor, who worked together to confirm Bo’s Down syndrome diagnosis and also identified a heart defect.
She was then connected with perinatal and pediatric cardiologist Dr. Tara Swanson, who compassionately guided the family through what to expect in the early days of Bo’s life. Throughout the remainder of her pregnancy, she received ongoing care and monitoring from the Fetal Health Center and the maternal-fetal medicine team at Midwest Perinatal Associates.
Bo was born on July 18, 2025, six weeks early, and spent 57 days in the NICU.
“During the most uncertain time in our lives, we felt reassured, supported and deeply cared for. We developed quick relationships with the staff in the Fetal Health Center and felt comfortable at every appointment. Everyone was highly knowledgeable and compassionate,” said Lindsay McVay.
“Many caregivers made a lasting impact. Dr. Swanson delivered complex information with both clarity and compassion and continues to care for Bo today. My maternal fetal medicine doctor brought a calm, reassuring presence and always took time to listen. In the NICU, Dr. Sam Burns not only guided Bo’s care but also offered a unique perspective as a parent of a child with Down syndrome.
Nurses and staff became an extension of our family. NICU nurse Cam Carlson provided constant support and advocacy, even taking Bo on his first stroller ride outside. Mary Kennedy offered comfort through shared experience. The Fetal Health Center team, including Erin Clemons, Alana Busby, Morgan Ogan and Krista Duke, helped us feel prepared and supported from the very beginning, offering guidance, reassurance and compassion during some of the most emotional moments.”
While no family expects to need specialized care during pregnancy or for their baby after birth, her journey showed that with the right care team, no one has to face it alone. Through expert care and genuine compassion, she found strength, support and hope.
“Today, Bo is the light of their lives. He has already overcome so much, including open heart surgery, and continues to thrive. He is resilient, determined and full of joy, known for his bright smiles and signature open-mouth kisses.”
This Mother’s Day, we honor her journey and the care team who helped guide her and her family every step of the way.
