I believe that the relationship I build with the patient is the foundation of my care for him/her and the most important thing I can do for him/her. Patients entrust their lives and the lives of their family members to myself and my team in intimate ways at vulnerable times, and they want to be treated with love and compassion, understanding and listening, respect and dignity. I aim to connect and build rapport through active listening, validation and clarification of what I’m hearing from him/her, clear communication and explanations, and shared and informed decision making. This creates a “therapeutic” relationship between myself and patients, and it is in this context of trust and love that health can flourish. Additionally, I seek to understand and address the physical, mental, spiritual, and relational needs of my patients, as these are all a part of health, and they all impact on the symptoms my patients are suffering from.
