Overland Park Regional Medical Center nationally recognized with three heart care awards

The American Heart Association awards prove dedication to life-saving care with the latest evidence- and research-based guidelines.

August 19, 2025

Overland Park, Kan. — Overland Park Regional Medical Center announced today that it has received three American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines® achievement awards for demonstrating commitment to following up-to-date, research-based guidelines for the treatment of heart disease, ultimately leading to more lives saved, shorter recovery times and fewer readmissions to the hospital.

Overland Park Regional Medical Center is part of HCA Midwest Health, Kansas City’s leading healthcare provider.

Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States, according to the American Heart Association 2025 Statistical Update. Studies show patients can recover better when providers consistently follow treatment guidelines.

Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest evidence- and research-based guidelines. As a participant in the Get With The Guidelines programs, Overland Park Regional Medical Center qualified for the awards by demonstrating how their organization has committed to improving quality care.

“Overland Park Regional Medical Center is committed to providing the best possible care for heart attacks and strokes,” said CEO Matt Sogard. “Recognition from programs like Get With The Guidelines helps ensure our team continues delivering evidence-based care that leads to longer, healthier lives for the communities we serve.”

This year, Overland Park Regional Medical Center received these three achievement awards:

Get With The Guidelines®-Heart Failure Gold Plus with Target: Heart Failure Optimal with Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll

Overland Park Regional Medical Center is recognized on the American Heart Association’s Target: Heart FailureSM Optimal. Hospitals receiving this award meet specific criteria that improve medication adherence, provide early follow-up care and coordination, and enhance patient education. Receiving the Optimal designation means a hospital has performed 50% or better for defect-free care. The goal is to further reduce hospital readmissions and help patients improve their quality of life in managing this chronic condition. About 6.7 million U.S. adults are living with heart failure (HF), a number that is expected to increase to more than 8 million by 2030.[1] Despite the name, HF doesn’t mean that the heart has stopped working – it means the heart is having a hard time pumping blood and oxygen throughout the body. While there’s no cure for HF, patients can live a quality life by working with their health care team to create and stick with a plan that may include medication, symptom monitoring and lifestyle changes.

Additionally, Overland Park Regional Medical Center received the American Heart Association’s Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll™ award. Target: Type 2 Diabetes aims to ensure patients with Type 2 diabetes, who might be at higher risk for complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to heart disease or stroke.

Get With The Guidelines®-Coronary Artery Disease STEMI Gold Plus with Target: Type 2 Diabetes

This recognition is for Overland Park Regional Medical Center’s commitment to offering rapid, research-based care to people experiencing a specific type of heart attack known as an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), known to be more severe and dangerous than other types of heart attacks. Each year, more than 1 million cases of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) require hospitalization in the U.S., and about 30% of ACS cases are classified as STEMI, caused by a complete blockage in a coronary artery.[2] Like all heart attacks, this requires timely treatment to restore blood flow as quickly as possible. Recognition as a STEMI Receiving Center is designed to showcase hospitals that provide 24/7 support for STEMI. These important facilities coordinate with a network of referring hospitals and emergency medical services to provide guideline-directed STEMI and NSTEMI care.

Get With The Guidelines®-Coronary Artery Disease NSTEMI Bronze

Overland Park Regional Medical Center received this recognition for its commitment to offering rapid, research-based care to people experiencing a specific type of heart attack known as a non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Each year, more than 1 million cases of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) require hospitalization in the U.S., and about 70% of ACS cases are classified as NSTEMI, caused by a partial blockage in a coronary artery.2, 3The NSTEMI award is earned by hospitals that demonstrate a commitment to treating patients according to the most up-to-date research-based guidelines for NSTEMI care as outlined by the American Heart Association.
